Titus Underwood
Nashville Symphony
Titus Underwood is the Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Associate Professor of Oboe at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, an Emmy Award winner, and the 2021 recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence. He is also a Sphinx MPower Grant recipient. Underwood earned his Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and his Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Highly sought after as a guest artist, Underwood has performed as Guest Principal Oboe with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony. He has also served as principal oboist with Chineke!, the Gateways Music Festival, and the Bellingham Festival of Music. His chamber music appearances include performances for the African Concert Series at Wigmore Hall, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and the People’s Symphony Concerts, and Chamber Music Northwest. He has appeared as a soloist at Carnegie Hall.
A dedicated educator, Underwood is a teaching artist for the Aspen Music Festival and School and the National Youth Orchestra programs at Carnegie Hall. He also teaches and mentors musicians through the National Alliance for Audition Support (NAAS), a collaboration among the League of American Orchestras, The Sphinx Organization, and the New World Symphony.
Underwood’s creative work extends beyond the concert stage. His visual project We Are Nashville earned an Emmy Award, and his film Lift Every Voice was featured in TIME Magazine. He also directed the short film A Tale of Two Tails. His latest project, an original children’s series, is scheduled for release in late 2026.
