Petrea Warneck
Oboist Petrea Warneck is a performing artist, music educator and teacher of the Alexander Technique. The conclusion of the 2025-26 concert season marks her 26 th season as a tenured member of the South Carolina Philharmonic, and for over three decades she has performed extensively throughout North and South Carolina as an orchestral and chamber musician. Petrea has a distinguished reputation as an educator- teaching oboe, chamber music, reed-making and the Alexander Technique. For her success and devotion to teaching she owes much to her mentor of over 25 years, John Mack. She credits his influence and teaching pedagogy for her continual development as a musician and educator throughout her career.
Dedicated to the health and wellness of performing artists – as well as anyone else who gets out of bed in the morning – Petrea is a devoted advocate of the importance of the Mind-Body connection, and its impact on balance, efficiency and quality of movement in any activity. The Alexander Technique has been her keystone in this work, to support the health and wellness of both performing artists and the more general population. She teaches Alexander Technique lessons, workshops and classes in person and online via video conference coaching. She is a certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique through Alexander Technique International.
Petrea remains an active orchestral and chamber music performer, with more time for performing as a result of her recent “partial retirement” from academia after 22+ years as the oboe professor at Furman University and the Governor’s School for the Arts in Greenville, SC. She continues important work at both schools, teaching the course “The Alexander Technique and Body Mapping,” and she enjoys more time for other passions such as travel, learning new languages, hiking, biking, gardening.
